Back in days when they weren't available yet on a broad level, left-handed guitarists, like Jimi Hendrix, would just restringtheir right-handed axes and then simply flip them over to play left-handed.
 
The only main difference, as far as the example above, is that since the low E string will be the longest string and the high E string will be the shortest, the sound will change, like Jimi's did.
 
By the way, if you are a right-handed player, you can achieve the same effect by restringing your left-handed guitar.
 
Many left-handed guitarists choose to follow Jimi's method, instead of playing an actual left-handed guitar, which is a matter of taste.

Interestingly, guitar companies used to charge a substantial extra fee for left-handed guitars. Thankfully, laws were passed against discriminatory practices of this sort and it's not the case anymore, in most cases.
 
Nowadays, there is a better variety of left-handed guitars out there, offered by many guitars brands, however the selection of lefties is still pretty limited. Unfortunately, there are not too many lefty chord books available either.
 
LH guitars are available in four (Bass), six and seven strings. Most notable or pioneering manufacturers are Cremona, Gibson, D'Angelico, N.Y. Epiphone. The most common solution, at least for a beginner, is to simply restring and flip over a right-handed instrument.
